It would be difficult to imagine Priyanka Chopra, whose stylish avatar in Dostana (2008) and scorching item number in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013) is still talked about, sporting a bald look in her upcoming film.
But the actor says that she has managed to “capture Mary Kom’s personality” in a biopic based on the Olympic medal-winning boxer’s life. Here, she talks about getting into character for the role.
How has the reaction been to the teaser?
Mary and I spoke the other day. She is completely overwhelmed [by the response] and so am I. I just hope that I can live up to her story and do justice to it.
It must have been a difficult journey.
What has been great for me is that Mary is a living, breathing person and she has been of huge help to me. I’m playing someone who is close to my age and that really helps. Yes, physically, we do look different, but I’ve really been able to encapsulate her personality. I’ve literally been obsessive calling and talking to her, and living with her. I’m just happy to have had this chance.
Has her story inspired you?
It’s a phenomenal journey a lovely story that has not just inspired me as a woman, but [can influence] anyone who wants to be more than what they’re told is their limit. Her journey has been a struggle and is really inspiring personally, and as an actor. I have to encapsulate the spirit of somebody who has been a hero to me. What I love about this film is that it bears such a close resemblance to Mary’s life, since it’s been told to us by her. I hope she finds it special. I have to show it to her in a few days and I’m nervous about that.
